Today we are going to talk about a place with a lot of history. 125 years to be exact. The Pereyra Theatre is one of the most emblematic places on the island of Ibiza where you can enjoy live music and shows throughout the year.
If you’re looking for cultural activities in Ibiza for your next trip to the island, here you’ll find the programme of this historic theatre, as well as taking a look inside and telling you more about this curious place.
History of the Pereyra Theatre
It all began in 1897 when the land on which the Pereyra Theatre stands today was put up for auction. The main objective of this space was to create a publicly accessible theatre. And so it was. On 6 April 1899 it was inaugurated and, 125 years later, the Teatro Pereyra offers between 150 and 200 events a year, including concerts, plays and other cultural shows.
Throughout its history it has hosted various events:
- In 1912 the theatre was the venue for the Agricultural Congress, which was a complete success.
However, in 1987 the main hall of the theatre ceased its activities, keeping its Café Pereyra open until 2018.
In 2006 everything began to change thanks to the fact that it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and in 2010 work began on its remodelling, finding archaeological remains under the floor of the Theatre, which belong to a Roman settlement.
In 2024 it was reborn, like a phoenix, attracting a large number of local and international artists, especially in genres such as jazz, flamenco, rock and soul.
Architectural design
The building stands out for its colonial-style architecture, a rarity on the island that blends Mediterranean influences with neoclassical details. The façade, with its pink tones and wide windows, invites visitors to enter a space that combines elegance with history.
The interior of the theatre has been carefully preserved, respecting original elements such as the ceiling and decorative mouldings.
